An online reading room with a purpose.

UnBanned helps readers discover and obtain banned and challenged books, particularly works about Black history and the African American experience. It serves readers, families, educators, book clubs, schools, libraries, and community organizations online.

What belongs on these shelves?

Our curated collection brings together histories, memoirs, biographies, novels, and picture books. Audience categories help readers explore; they are not a substitute for publisher guidance or an educator’s judgment.

Context is part of the collection.

Historical notes draw on PEN America, the American Library Association, and reporting. Some entries concern temporary review, curriculum restrictions, or bans later reversed. We link to the relevant source or source index and explain those distinctions in our source notes.

How purchases work.

Book links lead to Bookshop.org, which handles checkout and fulfillment. UnBanned may earn an affiliate commission; learn how the relationship works. There is no UnBanned retail checkout here.

For groups and future subscribers.

Bulk requests begin with an inquiry and a confirmed quote. The monthly box is in development; the waitlist does not take payment.
